Douglas Flint

Sir Douglas Flint

Chairman

Appointed to the Board: November 2018

Sir Douglas’ wide-ranging international and financial experience is an important asset to the business as it delivers against its strategy. His strong track record of board leadership as a chairman helps to facilitate open and constructive boardroom discussion.

Previously, Sir Douglas served as chairman of HSBC Holdings plc from 2010 to 2017. For 15 years prior to this he was HSBC’s group finance director, joining from KPMG where he was a partner. Between 2005 and 2011 he also served as a non-executive director of BP plc.

In other current roles, Sir Douglas is chairman of IP Group plc and serves as HM Treasury's special envoy to China's Belt and Road Initiative. He is also a member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore's international advisory panel, and of the board of the International Chamber of Commerce UK.

Additionally, he is chairman of the Just Finance Foundation, non-executive director of the Centre for Policy Studies, member of the global advisory council of Motive Partners and board member of the Institute of International Finance. He also chairs the Corporate Board of Cancer Research UK and is a trustee of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

He holds a BAcc (Hons) from the University of Glasgow, a PMD from Harvard Business School and is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

Stephen brings an established track record of delivering exceptional value to clients and customers, creating high quality revenue and earnings growth in complex and competitive financial markets, as well as deep experience of business transformation during periods of technological disruption and competitive change.

Stephen joined the Board in July 2020 as Chief Executive-Designate, and was formally appointed Chief Executive Officer in September 2020.

Previously, Stephen served as Chief Executive Officer of Global Consumer Banking at Citigroup from 2015, retiring from the role in November 2019. His responsibilities encompassed all consumer and commercial banking businesses in 19 countries, including retail banking and wealth management, credit cards, mortgages, and operations and technology supporting these businesses. Prior to this, Stephen was Chief Executive for all of Citigroup’s Asia Pacific business lines across 17 markets in the region, including India and China.

Stephen joined Citigroup in 1998, and during his 21 years with the company he held a number of leadership roles in banking, operations and technology across its Asian and Latin American businesses. Before this, he held management positions in the UK at GE Capital – where he was director of UK operations from 1996 to 1998 – and at British Steel.

He holds an MBA in Economics and Finance from University College Cardiff, where he is also an Honorary Fellow.

Stephanie was appointed Chief Financial Officer on joining the Board in June 2019. She is a highly experienced financial services practitioner with significant sector knowledge, both technical and commercial. She brings experience of working with boards and management teams of financial institutions in respect of financial and commercial management, reporting, risk and control frameworks and regulatory requirements.

Before joining Standard Life Aberdeen, Stephanie was a partner at PwC, a member of the Assurance Executive and led the financial services assurance practice. She joined Price Waterhouse in 1990, qualified as a chartered accountant in 1993 and joined the PwC partnership in 2002.

During her career, she has specialised in the financial services sector, working with organisations across asset management, insurance and banking, with national and international operations.

Stephanie is a council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and the chair of the audit committee for the Institute. Stephanie is also an associate of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Edinburgh.

Jonathan Asquith

Jonathan Asquith

Non-Executive Director and Senior Independent Director

Appointed to the Board: September 2019

Jonathan has considerable experience as a non-executive director within the investment management and wealth industry. This brings important insight to his roles as Senior Independent Director and Chair of our Remuneration Committee.

Jonathan is deputy chairman and senior independent director of 3i Group plc and non-executive director of CiCap Limited (Coller Capital), Northill Capital Services Limited and Northill UK Management Holdings Limited. Previously, he has been chairman of Citigroup Global Markets Limited, Citibank International Limited, Dexion Capital PLC and AXA Investment Managers. He has also been a director of Ashmore Group plc and AXA UK PLC.

In his executive career Jonathan worked at Morgan Grenfell for 18 years, rising to become group finance director of Morgan Grenfell Group, before going on to take the roles of chief financial officer and chief operating officer at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell. From 2002 to 2008 he was a director of Schroders, during which time he was chief financial officer and later executive vice chairman.

He holds an MA from the University of Cambridge.

John Devine

Appointed to the Board: July 2016

John’s previous roles in asset management, his experience in the US and Asia and his background in operations and technology, are all areas of importance to our strategy. John’s experience is important to the Board’s discussions of financial reporting and risk management, and in his role as Chairman of our Audit Committee.

John was appointed a Director of Standard Life plc in July 2016. From April 2015 until August 2016, he was non-executive Chairman of Standard Life Investments (Holdings) Limited.

He is non-executive chairman of Credit Suisse International, Credit Suisse Securities (Europe) Limited and a non-executive director of Citco Custody Limited and Citco Custody (UK) Limited.

From 2008 to 2010, John was chief operating officer of Threadneedle Asset Management Limited. Prior to this, he held a number of senior executive positions at Merrill Lynch in London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

He holds a BA (Hons) from Preston Polytechnic and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting.

Melanine Gee

Melanie Gee

Appointed to the Board: November 2015

Melanie brings to the Board significant executive experience in creating successful businesses and leading teams of bankers in various roles. This experience was derived from her career in financial services, where she has specialised in advisory and corporate finance work. She has also had a particular focus on the evolution of cultures and working practices, and is able to draw on these insights as our designated non-executive Director for employee engagement.

Melanie was appointed as a Director of Standard Life plc in November 2015. She is a non-executive director and chair of the healthcare company Syncona Limited, a FTSE 250 company. She is also chair of Ridgeway Partners Holdings Ltd and of its wholly-owned subsidiary Ridgeway Partners Limited. Melanie was appointed a managing director of Lazard and Co. Limited in 2008 and became a senior adviser in 2012.

Previously Melanie held various roles with UBS, having been appointed a managing director in 1999 and served as a senior relationship director from 2006 to 2008. She was a non-executive director of The Weir Group PLC between 2011 and 2017 and the Drax Group plc between 2013 and 2016.

She holds an MA in Mathematics from the University of Oxford.

Brian brings a wealth of digital experience and global leadership experience in both executive and non-executive directorship roles. His direct experience of developing digital strategies and solutions in consumer-facing businesses, in rapidly evolving markets, is of great benefit to the Board's discussions.

Brian is currently chair of Trainline PLC and non-executive director of Kinnevik AB. He is also the lead non-executive director on the board of the UK Ministry of Defence. He is a senior adviser to Lazard's UK financial advisory business and to Scottish Equity Partners.

In his executive career, Brian has worked for IBM, Crosfield Electronics and Dell before serving as chief executive officer of T-Mobile UK and then managing director of Amazon.co.uk. As a non-executive director, Brian has served on the boards of AO.com, the BBC, Celtic Football Club PLC, Computacenter PLC and S3 PLC, and as chair of ASOS PLC.

He holds an MA (Hons) in Economic History and Politics from the University of Glasgow.

Martin Pike

Martin provides broad commercial insight into strategy and risk to the Board, and to his role as Chair of our Risk and Capital Committee. He has particular knowledge of enterprise-wide risk management. His actuarial and strategic consultancy background brings a strong understanding of what drives success in the markets in which we operate.

Martin was appointed as a Director of Standard Life plc in September 2013. He is also chairman and non-executive director of Faraday Underwriting Limited – where he is a member of the audit and risk committee and chair of the nomination and remuneration committee. Between 2015 and 2018 he served as a non-executive director of esure Group plc where he was chair of the remuneration committee.

He joined R Watson and Sons, consulting actuaries, in 1983, and progressed his career with the firm to partner level. His senior roles included head of European insurance and financial services practice, Watson Wyatt from 2006 to 2009, vice president and global practice director of insurance and financial services, Watson Wyatt during 2009, and managing director of risk consulting & software for EMEA, Towers Watson from 2010 to 2013.

Martin holds an MA in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

Cathi Raffaeli

Cathi has strong experience in the financial technology sector and background in the platforms sector, as well as international board experience. She brings these insights to her role as non-executive chairman of the boards of Elevate Portfolio Services Limited and Standard Life Savings Limited. This role provides a direct link between the Board and the platform businesses that help us connect with customers and their advisers.

Cathi is a non-executive director of Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, where she is vice chair of the compensation and human resources committee and of the technology committee. She is also a member of the executive committee. She is managing partner of Hamilton White Group, LLC which offers advisory services, including business development, to companies in financial services growth markets. In addition, she is managing partner of Soho Venture Partners Inc, which offers third-party business advisory services.

Previously, Cathi was lead director of E*Trade Financial Corporation, non-executive director of Kapitall Holdings, LLC and president and chief executive officer of ProAct Technologies Corporation.

She holds an MBA from New York University and a BS from the University of Baltimore.

Cecilia Reyes

Cecilia Reyes

Cecilia brings great insight from operating in leadership positions in international financial markets. Her direct experience of risk management and her knowledge of the investment process are of great benefit to the work of the Board.

Before joining our Board, Cecilia was with Zurich Insurance Group Ltd (Zurich) for 17 years where she was most recently its group chief risk officer, leading the global function comprising group risk management and responsible for its enterprise risk management framework.

Prior to that, she was their group chief investment officer, responsible for the execution of the investment management value chain – including analysis, development and global implementation of the investment strategy for the group's investments. In both positions, she was a member of Zurich’s executive committee.

Cecilia started her career at Credit Suisse, following which she held senior positions at ING Barings, latterly as head of risk analysis, asset management. She is also the founder of Pioneer Management Services GmbH which seeks to develop a non-profit social enterprise.

She holds a BSc from Ateneo de Manila University, an MBA from the University of Hawaii and a PhD (Finance) from the London Business School, University of London.

Jutta has extensive knowledge of international management and strategy, from sector operational roles in a number of listed companies. Her previous experience, which includes group finance and auditing, risk management and mergers and acquisitions, allows her to offer valuable perspectives to strategic discussions.

Jutta was appointed a non-executive director of Aberdeen Asset Management PLC in January 2013. She is a non-executive director of JPMorgan European Investment Trust plc and chair of its audit committee. In addition, she is a non-executive director of NKT A/S and Nilfisk Holding A/S, and chairs the audit and remuneration committees of both organisations. She is also a member of the supervisory board of BBGI SICAV S.A, where she chairs the audit committee.

Previously, she was the executive vice president, chief financial officer, of ALKAbelló A/S and was chairman of Det Danske Klasselotteri A/S.

A qualified accountant, she holds a Master’s degree in Business Economics and Auditing from Copenhagen Business School.

Stephanie is a council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and the chair of the audit committee for the Institute. Stephanie is also an associate of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Edinburgh.

Rushad leads our global Legal and Secretariat function, which covers legal and corporate governance matters across our company. Rushad also advises the Board and executive management team on various strategic, operational, regulatory and risk issues. As part of his responsibilities, Rushad serves as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited.

Rushad joined Standard Life plc in January 2016. Before joining he was at The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, where he was Group Deputy General Counsel having previously served in other senior roles since 2006.

Rushad arrived in the UK in 2002 to work in the Corporate Finance practice at Dundas & Wilson (now part of global law firm CMS). He began his career in India working in Mumbai in Arthur Andersen’s Tax practice and latterly in Andersen Legal’s M&A and Private Equity team.

Global Head of Strategic Partnerships

James is responsible for all of Standard Life Aberdeen’s strategic partnerships including Heng An Standard Life, HDFC AMC, HDFC Life, Phoenix and Virgin Money. James also has responsibility for our corporate development activities which include mergers, acquisitions and corporate disposals. As part of his responsibilities, he has also served as non-executive director of HDFC Asset Management since 2009.

James joined Standard Life in 1997 and has previously held senior roles in strategy, international business development, distribution and Asia. Prior to Standard Life, James worked for AEGON where he was a fund manager and, latterly, responsible for marketing international equities into the USA.

Noel leads our adviser platforms, Wrap and Elevate, and is responsible for setting, leading and delivering our UK platform strategy.

Noel has worked in financial services for over 30 years, with extensive experience of delivering solutions to meet diverse client and customer needs. He joined Standard Life in October 2003, holding a number of senior management positions prior to his appointment as CEO in 2019. Noel is also the Chairman of our financial planning business 1825 and a board director for Aberdeen Standard Capital. Alongside this role, he is an Executive Sponsor of our employee network, Balance, which promotes an inclusive working environment by helping to improve gender balance at all levels.

Before joining our business Noel held a number of sales and distribution roles in financial services. He started as a Senior IFA Consultant with General Accident Life, before progressing to Regional IFA Sales Director (Central Region) with National Provident Institution.

Richard Charnock

CEO, Aberdeen Standard Capital

Richard is CEO of Aberdeen Standard Capital, which provides discretionary fund management in the UK wealth management sector. He is also Director of Aberdeen Standard Capital International Limited, and a non-executive director of HDFC International Life and Re Company.

Richard joined Standard Life in 2007. He was a member of Standard Life’s UK Executive Board from 2010 to 2014 and subsequently became Managing Director of the Adviser and Investment business of Standard Life in the UK. He had responsibility for all Standard Life retail channel activity in the UK and Ireland and was CEO of Standard Life Savings, with responsibility for the Wrap platform and Fundzone businesses. Richard was also an executive director of Standard Life Investments from 2014 to 2018.

Before joining Standard Life, Richard was CEO of Williams de Broe and prior to that he was CEO of Lloyds TSB Private Banking, Lloyds TSB IFA and Lloyds TSB Stockbrokers.

Richard is a member of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and the Cornhill Club. For 12 years up to 2020 he was also a Board Director and Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.

Chris is responsible for operations across North and South America. He is a member of the Executive Leadership Team as well as several other committees within our business.

Chris joined Aberdeen Asset Management in 2013, as a result of the acquisition of SVG – a FTSE 250 private equity investor based in London – where he was working at the time. Chris moved to the United States in 2014 to assume the role of Chief Financial Officer for Aberdeen in the Americas. In 2016 he was appointed Deputy CEO for the Americas.

Chris is a Chartered Accountant. Before joining SVG, he worked at Ernst & Young, specialising in Asset and Wealth Management audits and transactions.

Alex leads our global, client-facing asset management distribution function. Alex joined the business in September 2018 as our Global Sales Director, responsible for co-ordinating the global sales activity at Aberdeen Standard Investments.

Alex joined from Blackrock where he was Head of the EMEA Retail business and a member of the EMEA executive committee, the Global Operating Committee and the Global Client Committee. At Blackrock, Alex was the founder and creator of 'the Village' which was dedicated to focusing on young people’s careers. Alex was also on the board of the Investment Association in the UK. Alex previously worked for Mercury Asset Management and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, now both parts of Blackrock.

Head of UK and EMEA

Gary leads the asset management business activities of our entities domiciled or operating in the EMEA region – Europe, including UK, Middle East and Africa. He is part of our Executive Leadership Team, and serves as Chief Executive of our primary fund management companies in the UK and Luxembourg.

Gary was previously Group Head of Product for Aberdeen Asset Management and joined the Aberdeen Group in 1997, serving as a member of Aberdeen's Group Management Board. He has had experience in many aspects of Aberdeen's operations in his previous roles, having been based in London and Edinburgh, and also in Philadelphia – where he led Aberdeen’s business in the Americas from 2010 to 2014.

Gary joined the financial services industry in 1983, working initially in marketing and product development at Scottish Provident, a UK life assurer. Gary joined Aberdeen when it acquired Prolific Financial Management – then a UK asset management subsidiary of Scottish Provident – where he had been working until the acquisition.

Gareth has been Chief Risk Officer of Standard Life Aberdeen since January 2018. He joined Standard Life in January 2017 as Chief Risk Officer of Standard Life Investments and Deputy Group Chief Risk Officer.

Previously, Gareth spent six years as Director of Markets Supervision at the Central Bank of Ireland. During that time, he was also a member of the Board of Supervisors of the European Securities and Markets Authority and chair of its Investment Management Standing Committee.

From 1995, Gareth spent 13 years in the investment banking and hedge fund industries, initially at Long-Term Capital Management, then at JP Morgan where he was Co-Head of European Equity Flow Derivatives, and then at Castlegrove Capital Management where he was a partner. This period was book-ended by two stints at the Bank of England where he started his career as an economist in 1992, returning in 2008.

Having worked for over 35 years in the asset management industry, Rod brings a wealth of investment experience, an extensive technical skillset and valuable knowledge of global markets to his role as Chief Investment Officer for Standard Life Aberdeen plc.

Rod joined Standard Life Investments in 2002 as Head of Global Fixed Income, and was appointed as Head of Investments in 2007 and latterly as Chief Investment Officer in 2013. His current responsibilities as Chief Investment Officer include oversight of investment activities in both public and private markets. From 2017 to 2019 Rod served on the Board of Standard Life Aberdeen plc, and before this was a Board member at Standard Life Investments from 2004. Rod stepped down from the plc Board in 2019 following completion of the post-merger integration of our investments businesses.

Previously, Rod was a Managing Director of Global Fixed Income at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and, before that, a Director at Mercury Asset Management which he joined in 1984. He started his career at Chase Manhattan Bank as a Credit Analyst in 1981. During his career Rod has gained experience in the direct management of both Equity and Fixed Income portfolios for a wide variety of mandates, prior to assuming broader management and oversight responsibilities.

CEO, 1825 and interim Head of Savings and Wealth

Julie was part of the team that launched 1825, our financial planning business in the UK, in 2015. She held the position of Chief Operating Officer before being appointed as its CEO in September 2017. She also leads our direct-to-consumer business in the UK, and is responsible for the development and launch of our direct-to-customer digital advice offering, enabling more customers to access advice by providing a digital and human service at scale.

Prior to joining 1825, Julie held the roles of Business and Investment Services Director for Standard Life’s Corporate Retail and Wholesale business, and of Customer Operations Director for Platforms. She is also a non-executive director on our joint venture with Virgin Money.

Julie has worked across a number of different organisations, leading teams in regulated sales, customer service, operations and HR both in the UK and overseas. Prior to joining our business she held various executive roles within RBS Group across retail, business, corporate and private banking – including in sales and service development and in organisational effectiveness, within both the UK and the USA.

Rose was appointed Chief HR Officer in February 2019. She has extensive experience of leadership roles at some of the world’s biggest brands, specialising in talent management, culture and leadership. Originally from Australia, she has lived and worked across Asia, the USA and Europe.

Before joining our business, Rose was Chief HR Officer at Travelport Worldwide, a global business specialising in technology for the travel industry.

Prior to Travelport, Rose gained significant experience in the financial services industry as Managing Director, HR at Barclays Bank PLC. She has also held senior HR positions at The Coca-Cola Company, The Walt Disney Company and IBM.

Mike was appointed as Chief Operating Officer in March 2019. He is responsible for all aspects of Operations and Technology across our company, including the management of our relationships with major outsource providers. Mike also has overall responsibility for Platform Operations in the UK.

Mike joined Standard Life as a graduate trainee in 1994. Before his current role, he previously had senior roles in Mutual Funds Operations, Change Management and Investment Operations. He was appointed to the Board of Standard Life Investments as Executive Director of Operations in August 2010, a role which expanded with the merger of Standard Life and Aberdeen Asset Management in 2017.

Mike is also a former professional football referee, having taken charge of 60 Scottish Premier League games during 10 years at the top level of Scottish football.

Stephen was appointed Chief Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer in October 2020. He joined as Chief Communications Officer in June 2019, before becoming Chief Corporate Affairs Officer in February 2020He has wide-ranging experience in leadership roles at large blue chip organisations, with a specific focus on communications and reputation management.

Stephen’s experience in the financial services industry includes roles as Group Communications Director for Prudential plc, and as Group Corporate Affairs Director for Barclays PLC. Before joining our business, he worked in Australian private equity.

Prior to this Stephen was Chief Executive Officer of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, the UK’s statutory trade body representing the research-based industry. His earlier career includes communications leadership roles with Allied Domecq PLC, Diageo plc, Eli Lilly and Company, and GSK.

Hugh is responsible for leading our asset management business in Asia Pacific. He is a director of a number of group subsidiary companies and group-managed investment trusts and funds.

Hugh was previously a main board director and Head of Investments for Aberdeen Asset Management. He joined Aberdeen Asset Management in 1985 to manage Asian equities from London. He founded Singapore-based Aberdeen Asia in 1992 and built the company into one of the largest and most well-respected managers of such assets globally.

Hugh started his investment management career in 1980. Before joining Aberdeen, he held posts at Fidelity International and MGM Assurance.

    Appointed to the Board: July 2020

    Stephen brings an established track record of delivering exceptional value to clients and customers, creating high quality revenue and earnings growth in complex and competitive financial markets, as well as deep experience of business transformation during periods of technological disruption and competitive change.

    Stephen joined the Board in July 2020 as Chief Executive-Designate, and was formally appointed Chief Executive Officer in September 2020.

    Previously, Stephen served as Chief Executive Officer of Global Consumer Banking at Citigroup from 2015, retiring from the role in November 2019. His responsibilities encompassed all consumer and commercial banking businesses in 19 countries, including retail banking and wealth management, credit cards, mortgages, and operations and technology supporting these businesses. Prior to this, Stephen was Chief Executive for all of Citigroup’s Asia Pacific business lines across 17 markets in the region, including India and China.

    Stephen joined Citigroup in 1998, and during his 21 years with the company he held a number of leadership roles in banking, operations and technology across its Asian and Latin American businesses. Before this, he held management positions in the UK at GE Capital – where he was director of UK operations from 1996 to 1998 – and at British Steel.

    He holds an MBA in Economics and Finance from University College Cardiff, where he is also an Honorary Fellow.

    Stephanie was appointed Chief Financial Officer on joining the Board in June 2019. She is a highly experienced financial services practitioner with significant sector knowledge, both technical and commercial. She brings experience of working with boards and management teams of financial institutions in respect of financial and commercial management, reporting, risk and control frameworks and regulatory requirements.

    Before joining Standard Life Aberdeen, Stephanie was a partner at PwC, a member of the Assurance Executive and led the financial services assurance practice. She joined Price Waterhouse in 1990, qualified as a chartered accountant in 1993 and joined the PwC partnership in 2002.

    During her career, she has specialised in the financial services sector, working with organisations across asset management, insurance and banking, with national and international operations.

    Stephanie is a council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and the chair of the audit committee for the Institute. Stephanie is also an associate of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Edinburgh.
