Our legal team supports all of our businesses in managing their legal risks. It plays a big role in helping us to reach our strategic aims, to protect our reputation, and to look after our customers' needs.
“Being trusted by my colleagues to take on and play my part in completing significant pieces of work for the group has been great for building my confidence early in my career and has been excellent development as a legal professional.”
The opportunity to join us as a legal trainee is one that is unique, challenging and rewarding. We are currently looking for world-class talent to join our legal and company secretariat team in Edinburgh for a two-year Scots law training contract starting in September 2020.
Our legal and company secretariat team touches all parts of the business, playing a role in helping the company reach its strategic aims, protecting our reputation and looking after our clients’ and customers’ needs. The team supports all business functions from contracting for services to managing public company obligations to resolving client disputes.
We look for people with excellent analytical skills, and the drive to make those skills count. An ability to see the bigger picture is important too – to help you to make balanced decisions, and communicate clearly with whomever you’re working with. From the day you join, we expect to challenge you to learn the practice of law, giving you the opportunity to be involved in a range of projects.
We aim to provide you with the opportunity to work with seasoned professionals across both our legal and secretariat team and more broadly, our world-class investment business, and to engage in development activities with your colleagues.
The trainee programme at Standard Life Aberdeen normally includes a total of four or five trainees, combining both secondees from principal legal advisers and our in-house trainee team. While we work flexibly across teams to meet our business partners’ needs, we ordinarily have seats available in Platforms, Commercial, Asset Management, Dispute Resolution and the General Counsel’s Office.
We offer a well-rounded programme for a variety of substantive experience.
During your traineeship, you'll work towards your entry qualification to the Law Society of Scotland. Mandatory training under the PEAT 2 programme is provided by one of our external firms, giving our trainees the opportunity to network more broadly in the Scottish legal community.
There will also be talks and workshops from other teams, to provide insight into many different commercial and technical matters.
This programme gives legal graduates the chance to start their career in a supportive team environment, while gaining high quality skills and experience.
If you want to be part of our exciting global journey to become a world-class investment company and are motivated by where we are going, then invest in your career with us.
Applications for the legal trainee programme will open in January 2020.
“During my time on the graduate scheme I feel my contribution has been valued by my colleagues and having worked with people in various departments, have always found everyone to be friendly, approachable and ready to help.”
